The easy answer is because they get overloaded. The overload can occur 2 ways:

  • the tooth has been weakened by decay or restorations that don’t reinforce it.
  • the load on the tooth is excessive – for example, chewing ice, clenching or grinding.

Unfortunately, this sort of overload often occurs while we sleep, and we don’t even know about it.
